Education and training
THE PROJECT
The single biggest
determinant
of a child's survival is her mother's
education. MHOP enrolls 16+ year
old women in a 3-month literacy program
based out of our Community
Center. Each year
120 girls and women learn:
- Literacy
- Entrepreneurship, math, and saving
- Health information
- Work skills
After the course, the girls
and women are given the option to apply for
entrepreneurial financing
through our microfinance program. The
program gives participants the option to build
on skills such
as fabric-dying, soap making, and sewing, as
well as
the basic literacy they learned during their
coursework.

THE INNOVATION
- Girls! While most programs focus on adult literacy, teaching girls is much more effective. Girls gain the skills they need to advocate for themselves and their communities; then, one generation down the line, their children have much better chances at survival. We prioritize girls in our enrollment process.
- Contextual literacy. Instead of learning literacy through irrelevant texts, our students learn to make a difference in their communities' and families' health.
