Come join us for a great party and be transported back to 1960s Bamako. We promise an evening of great Afro Funk and Malian music, a showcase of Mali’s best photographers, and even better vibes. We’ll bring the James Brown and Ali Farka Touré, you bring the bell bottoms…
What’s a Bamako rent party, you ask?
Like so many, we have been deeply affected by the cuts to USAID. So, we are doing some extra fundraising – our way.
Rent parties started in Harlem in the 1920s as a way to help folks pay the rent. If the first of the month was coming and you were short, you would throw a good party, invite your friends, and pass the hat (or in our case, the calabash). Everyone chipped in and had a good time. We love the idea of bringing joy, culture, and solidarity to a tight spot – so we’re doing the same thing.
The 1960s were a hopeful time in Bamako and across West Africa. Against the backdrop of independence and decolonization, Bamako’s nightlife, fashion, and youth culture were at their peaks. The future was bright and the possibilities seemed endless – and we could all use a bit of that right now. Come join us, y’all.
